Blog-o-versary!

On January 31st it will 4 years that I've had this blog... wow!

Thursday Thirteen



1)  Well, our kitty didn't fare very well.  First they said cardio myopothy, then congestive heart failure.  Both are bad enough.  Then, after the 2 remaining blood tests came back, we found out Aramis (aka Bubba) had Cancer.  We had to put him down on Tuesday night. :(

2)  I am totally and utterly amazed at how resilient 5 year olds are.  Either Cassie took Bubba's passing in stride, or she really doesn't get it.  Probably the later, but she did shed a few tears.

3)  Tonight I have my first "fartlek" run.  Heh, heh... FARTlek.  (I know... I'm a goober.)

4)  My first time trial swim is tomorrow. It's actually the first of 3 I will do before Lonestar. 1,000 m at race pace. Not like I'll be lightening fast, but I think I'm faster than I was last year, so I am curious to see how I do.

5)  My running club team is having a party to celebrate our full/half marathon finishes.

6)  Oh!  From "freak my freak: category:  I called my Mom to tell her about Bubba and she told me that my sister's declawed house cat of almost 20 years got out of the house.  The night Bubba passed, they found "Dominque", after 3 days, under a shed; dirty and scared. 

7)  You can meet a ton of folks thought the blog-o-sphere, but remember, you never know who will find you. :)

8)  It is my Brother's birthday this week.  It's sad how he has alienated himself from the rest of the family.  This morning it hit me when I was talking to Cassie.  I said something about an uncle... and realized she has never met her "Uncle Adam."

9)  I am super-proud of my sister and her students at he Dance school.  Mom and Leah took them to a huge competition in NY where all the same teams generally win, and the kids took highest honors for all their numbers.

10) Speaking of Mom... she has a cold :( and a new flat-screen wall-mount TV!  :)

11) Cassie has the whole weekend planned out.  I get time to run on Saturday, but then we're going to "Cracker Barrow" for breakfast, watching "Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs", making 'healthy' donuts -- and she's wearing her dress tht looks like it has sprinkles all over it.  As a matter of fact, I am to wash it tonight so she can wear it. 

12)  Cass went to Space Center Houston yesterday.  She said her "high point was seeing the space suit for the oldest [I think she meant first] girl astronaut." 

13)  We're thinking about another family pet.  We have an offer for another cat, but are thinking about a dog.  Suggestions?  We're not looking for a toy-anything... medium to large.

It's Officially Tri Season!

We had a good weekend.  On Saturday I volunteered for a race down in the Lake Jackson/Freeport area, the Surfside Shuffle 10K-5k and Kid-K.  One of my coaches was heading up the event along with the fellow members of their triathlon club.  It was a fun event and everyone had a great time. The run was on Surfside beach... right on the beach.  It was kind of neat seeing the runners emerge from the fog as they approached the Finish line. Anyway, it was a great success.  Lots of participation and I think exceeded their expectations.

I didn't have to train Saturday, which was strange.. very strange.  That's all I'll say about that. 

On Sunday was mad-spin; 3 hours followed by a 30 minute run.  I wasn't such a superstar this week.  I neglected to eat anything before spin and was short gels.  I did have a powerbar, but that didn't really cut it.  About 2.5 hours in I started cramping in my calve.  Ugh!  One of my other coaches gave me a gel, I walked and stretched and recovered, then headed out for my run.  I was fine thereafter.  I really have to watch my nutrition though. 

I do think Nutrition is going to be a big challenge, but I also think that once I find the right balance, it will be awesome.  It's getting there that's the challenge.  I can only eat so much volume.  What I really need to find out is if I eat 1400 calories in a day, how much of that am I actually absorbing, post-RNY. 

If I get in 1400 calories, but only absorb 1100 of them, and then do a 3 hour ride and burn 1700, I hold a constant deficit.  It does nothing for my body (to lose weight) or maintaining energy.  The RMR test was not accurate, according to my Endo.  Add to that the hypothyroid stuff, and who knows exactly what I'm burning.  Seriously...  how can I train 83 miles in one week and weigh exactly the same eating 1400, or so calories a day?  I have got to find some info on this topic.

I am going to try to squeeze some more calories in and focus on what I can do to enable recovery.  Nearly half my diet is still protein, so I'm good there, but I think what I need are some options for immediately after... maybe some kind of supplementation.  I've been trying Extend, which is branch chain amino acids that your body has to get from food (you can't make it), but that doesn't help with energy. 

I did find a blog today that gives me hope.  What an amazing guy!  And it seems like he trained while losing.  I've found some other post-op endurance athletes, but they waited to start training until they were near their goal.  If you want some inspiration, check him out.  I did write him to ask him about his nutrition strategy -- my hope is he'll write back! 

Also rolling around my head is my career challenge.  I'm beginning to see some clarity in a path that could actually work.  I feel differently this time, like this option is really possible.  More to come on that, but not much will happen toward that end until we know what to expect in the next year with family-logistics. 

So it's officially tri season and training has started -- surprise to me since I thought I started 6 weeks ago.  That must have been "practice" training. :)  I started off with a big thud yesterday. 

I had a 1 hr. bike (easy spin) and 1 hour swim (drills) .  We recently joined the Y only a mile from my house, so I decided I would spin in the 5am class instead of on my bike & trainer in my kitchen.  Well, the spin was probably a bit much after the day before, and though my swim was in the afternoon, I really felt crappy. I probably didn't have enough recovery time since I couldn't get my HR up ( I sure felt like it was though!).  Swimming at a recovery pace was fine, but I tried doing intervals, and just couldn't breathe... it was terrible.  My average HR was 111, but I think my HR monitor went wonky on me.  Who knows?  I have make sure I practice at the proper intensity, otherwise I'll find myself injured and not getting the most from my workouts. 

Track work today.  10 x 500's.  It's finally some nice weather... 70-something yesterday! A great day for running

Thursday Thirteen... late



Just a little late...  total randomness today:

1) If Windows updates weren't annoying enough, I have to do them on my Blackberry too!  I hate updating stuff -- often it leads to something breaking.  

2) Rode on my bike trainer this morning.  I still ♥ my new bike.  Aerobars need a little more tweaking.  Got my demo ISM seat coming in today -- hope it helps with some comfort. I hate the new saddle I chose!

3) When I do my early-morning training rides I find it so hard to get-in-gear.  It's not like I'm tired... I'm ready to go.  Just not ready to get ready to go!

4) Now that the running season is over and the half is behind me, I'm looking forwrad to "just" tri training.

5) My kiddo knows her telephone number now!  Yay!!
6) Hubs is doing awesome with his running progress.  If he keeps it up, he'll be faster than me in no time. 
7) We have a really sick cat. Hubs is taking him to the vet today.  Keep fingers crossed that our "Bubba" is okay.
8) 3 great words: post race massage.  Enough said.

9) You know you're a triathlete because whenever you type the word try, as in effort, you always type TRI. 

10) 79 degrees here in Houston yesterday -- my hope is that Winter is over!

11) I've worn my Finishers shirt for the half 3 times since Sunday.  I'm going to wash the logo right off the front. Really... three times. LOL

Aramco Houston Half Marathon Race Report


Frist, the race experience was great! I loved the supporters, the volunteers, the bands! The race for me was okay, though I am proud of the accomplishment in it of itself. Last year at this time I couldn't even run a 5k -- in fact I had only started to REALLY try to run for the first time... ever.

Everything that morning went according to my race plan. All things encountered were well within my control, so that was a plus. I hooked up with Cathy and headed over to the BAF tent for warm-up and club pictures. Nothing out of the norm. I was super excited to get things going.

Cathy asked if she could run with me. She runs much faster than me... in fact, she just finished her first Ironman in Panama City. When she asked me, I was surprised, but welcomed the experience and the company. Incidentally she was also with me the first time I had to run 10 miles. :)

We were corralled (and warm) while waiting packed like sardines with everyone else. I guess it was at that time I really understood that this was a world-class event and the largest I have ever done. More than 20,000 people from all over the world!

So... at 7:12 BOOM! the cannon went off for my wave. It was crowded and you really could not do much in the way of running, but of course there were those who were. My only goal was not to blow it all in the beginning. That said, the fact that the run starts on an uphill overpass certainly helps one control pace! The first couple miles were uneventful, and slower than my desired half-mar tempo pace, because of the crowd. The faster runners shared their annoyance at the slower runners and walkers... which kind ticked me off. If they didn't want to have obstacles, why not get there on time and in your proper wave? Gees! I did my part ettiquette wise to keep right, but somehow you still piss someone off who thinks you don't have a right to be there unless you run an 8 minute mile or better.

The first thing I recall was how neighborhoods of people were outside supporting us... folks you would not think would bother or waste time watching people run by their house. They were cheering, calling our names, jokingly offering coffee and donuts and playing music nice and loud to pump us up. They were having so much fun and it added to the excitement.

After a couple miles in I was concerned that my legs felt heavy (they had right from the Start). Cathy encouraged me and said maybe I needed more distance to warmup. I just tried to stay positive and ignored all the time clocks and volunteers calling out pace times. Endurance-wise I was doing excellent. Heart-rate was a good race day effort. I felt good -- it was my legs that just didn't feel right. I did some hill training earlier in the season, but looking back, I'm not sure it was enough... clearly there were more uphills than I remembered anyone mentioning, but my plan was to not kill myself on the uphill, but to make it up on the downhill. Which was working... by the 10K mark my goals were still in site, though my stretch goal would have been super-stretch for sure. I was okay with my stretch goal passing me. I just kept focused and steady.

I was doing okay until about mile 8. Around then my right glute started to tighten up on me and I had to keep stretching it. This never ever happened to me before in any training run. By mile 10 the pain was literally stabbing. At this point I switched to a 5/1 and was hanging in there, barely making the run 5 before I would tighten up again. I realized I missed my stretch goal (which was okay because it was a stretch!), but I did feel some disappointment because my realistic goal of sub 3 hours, which was sooo close, might be escaping me too.

I didn't want to be self-defeating, so at that moment I made it a point to get it together, but the pain was bad; once I hit Rusk I just kept focusing on doing the best I could and finish as strong as I could. I really didn't hear or see anyone until I crossed the Finish. I did hear Cathy trying to tell me to, "Look at all the people!" to keep me from thinking about the pain, but I was already stuck in my own head. In fact, one of my tri coaches, Melanie ran right up on us and it wasn't until she was in my face that I really saw her -- I just kept running! I could see the corner of the GRB sticking out! I finished 3:02 (Just 2 minutes shy of my goal!)


I don't want to sound like I am giving an acceptance speech, but I was so appreciative to Cathy for running me! She was with me the first time I ran 10 miles and this time she was with me when I ran my first half marathon. She could have run her own race, a faster race, or with someone else who might have been more entertaining... but she stuck with me anyway! And though I may have been kinda quiet, trying focus on what I needed to do, she was there encouraging me nonetheless! That, to me, is what is so awesome about my tri club and running club -- I love the way more experienced athletes share their experience and give-back to less experienced athletes. There is so much to learn from all of them! And yeah... I'll do it again.... who knows.... maybe even the full!

It's 3:56 am... do you know where your half-marathon runner is?

I woke around 2am and took my thyroid meds... of course I knew I wasn't going back to sleep.  I laid in bed and drifted in and out of a light sleep until 3.  I stopped fighting it and woke-up.  I went to bed at 7:30 last night... so almost 7 hours is good enough.

So now I'm pretty much ready.  Packed my needs up last night and here I sit on the computer looking for that last little piece of motivation that will keep me positive through the race.

While today won't define who I am, it will define my mental toughness and ability to either push-through and believe in my abilities, or whether I dial it in and say, "It's too late now... forget it."

I'll be blogging later, for sure!  In the meantime... from my Daughter...

What's In a Number...


Yesterday was the Expo and packet pickup.  So here's my lucky number!

I know... I'm a dork.  But this is my first half-marathon and there will only be one first.  So bear with me while I get excited over anything possible to keep me positive and focused on my goals.  :)

I also got a leg massage and had a stretch session.  My legs felt/feel great.  Since yesterday I've been making sure to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.

I'm having a little bout with sinuses crud right now and am doing whatever I can to stave it of.  The massage therapist suggested a mist that a local naturals store sells... it's Oregano and Silver.  I know, sounds weird, but I could tell I was only a day or so from a sinus infection, so I had to do something.  I started using it last night, and I'm not sure, but I think it made a difference.  I'll know for sure in a few ours after the decongestant and expectorant completely wear off.  Evidently it is a anti-fungural thing.  More on it later.

Today is a day of complete rest.  We have a birthday party and of course food shopping has to get done.   Other that that, nothing... except race prep and rest.

Thursday Thirteen

Thirteen Positive Thoughts or Actions for my first Half-Marathon!

1)  Count on the fact that I've trained regularly and worked hard.  Trust!
2)  Believe that I will not just "Finish", but that I will reach one of my goals.
3)  My realistic goal of sub 3 hours is definitely doable on a Race Day, but dig-in and gi for my stretch of 2:50!
4)  Trust my race strategy and stick to it. 
5)  I am strong... and not just for a person like me.  I AM STRONG.
6)  Think about crossing the Finish and what it means for me to achieve this
7)  Don't minimize whatever the outcome is... even if it's not the desired outcome the journey was a lesson
8)  Have fun!  Have fun!  Have fun!!
9) There really is no such thing as "I can't." 
10) In reference to number 9 -- "Try not. Do or do not, there is no try."  Worked for Yoda!
11) Remember and appreciate how supportive my friends and family have been.
12) Don't blow it all in the first few miles; keep MY pace.
13)  Have fun!  It deserves to be said a fourth time!

The Ol' Noggin'


I think a lot of my problems are with the programming in my head.

I do believe that as an athlete you have to show yourself a little self-love to succeed. All this setting of goals and making time for training is teaches you to be self-centered (different from selfish) if that makes sense.

The need to constantly tell myself "I can", and follow-it up with the "do", and then succeed is the only way I think I will be able to change what it is I hear in my head.

I think that's where I fell last week; when it clicked for me that there's so much more wrapped up in my head than just "finishing" the half -- or any of the races I attempt for that matter. Anyone can "finish", pretty much. if they don't care about their time. 

But I've worked hard and feel llike I chose reasonable goal. I was out there on my long runs when others were MIA or the club canceled a run. I was at the track, actually adhereing to my track workouts when others didn't. So, yeah, I guess I expect to finish decently and better than those who slacked!  Is that expecting too much?

If I don't, I was feeling like my weight would win yet again.

I'm not sure I'm entirely past that thought, but I'm working on it daily.

Update to FREwC

Well, I did it.  It ws freakin' cold too!  As the sweat dripped from my face and hit my jacket it froze!  I looked like sparkles.  I got a tiny bit hot, but was so glad I had my fleece when I hit downtown and the wind was whipping between the buildings.

At one point I knew my legs were touching, but I coudln't feel them!  Did my 6.22 miles in about 1:24... not light speed, but this was meant to be a slow run -- and I'm REALLY good at those. :)

I'm as ready as I'll ever be for next weekend.  This week I'll be sure to rest and not do any more than is necessary.  I really believe I reach a sub 3hr time, I just have to make sure everything goes right.  I also know I can't control things that are out of my control.  I will just focus on keeping positive.

FREwC

So this morning is the FREwC.  That's the "Funnest Run Ever with Chris."  Chris is one of my coaches.  Here I thought it was going to be 19 degrees, but it's a balmy 22 degrees and with the windchill it makes it feel like 13!  The biggest challenge is figuring out what to wear -- not too much.  Not too little.

I'll be running the last 6 miles of the half-mar course and "vizzing":  visualizing race day.  It might be a cold run, but I think it will be really good for me.  I'll be on my own, but that's okay.  :)

I had a good swim last night.... longer than I anticipated.  It was supposed to be an hour, but I wound up doing 90 minutes.  I got a little distracted when the gym's pool was full of other swimmers from my club, including 2 of my coaches.  When I was done I just watched them plow through the water... it's so wild to watch them move with such speed through the water.  When I do my intervals I feel like I look like I'm drowing... all form goes out the window!  But I guess that's why you drill, drill, drill.

Tomorrow is what I'm calling "Mad Spin"; 3 hours long, followed by a run. 

Oh, I got my legs "stretched" yesterday, too.  I think I might be taller now!  :)  I have 2 more stretching sessions and a massage before the half-mar.  I'm hoping the stretching is going to help me out; I am pretty tight.  I would love to get in some regular hot yoga... but when?  There is just so many hours in a day.  I will get it figured out.  Keeping flexible is important!

Friday

Had a good bike and run yesterday and each day I am feeling more positive.  Guess I was just letting nerves get the best of me the other day.  Tonight I swim for an hour. :)

Tomorrow we're doing our LSD run on the last 6.2 miles of the half marathon course.  Should be fun and a good op to run through my raceday prep. 

Oh, and it's supposed to be 19 degrees tomorrow morning.  Joy.

Thursday...

Got up at 4:15 this morning and hit the bike/trainer for an hour and had a good ride.  30 minute tempo run tonight and then home for nice, warm chili!  It is supposed to get stupid-cold tonight... everyone is wrapping up their trees, etc. 

I'm feeling much better today about everything.  Right now I'm not letting any negative thoughts enter my head.  I am just working on being positive about everything!  It's going to be great.  It's going to be fun and I will achieve my goals!

Creamy White Chicken Chili

Nutritional Info
Fat: 5.0g

Ingredients
1 lb. Chicken breast, diced, no skin/bones
1 Onion, medium, chopped
1 T. Olive Oil
2 Cans (15 oz.) Northern Beans
1 Can (14 oz.) Chicken broth
2 Cans Chopped green Chilis
1 t. Garlic powder
1 t. salt
1 t. cumin
1 t. oregano
1 t. black pepper
1 C. Lowfat Sour Cream

Directions
Saute onion and chicken in olive oil. Add remaining ingredients (except sour cream) and simmer for 30 minutes. Mix in sour cream after simmering is complete.

You can also save time by using a rotisserie chicken and reducing the simmering time! Just add everything after the onions become translucent, simmer, then mix in sour cream.

Houston Half-Mar Race Plan

On of my Coaches wanted us to think about our race plans.  The best way to organize my thoughts is to write them down.  This is my first attempt at a real plan...  I kind of felt like I was writing my birth plan for the hospital when I had Cassie!!!

Two weeks before make doubly sure to be hydrated properly and eat clean 100% -- journal every bite. Limit green leafy veggies day before!

Avoid any comments like "If my legs feel good". It should be "When my legs feel good"! Think positive! Negative thoughts or concerns often become reality.

I've trained as hard as I can. Believe I can achieve my goal and repeat it over and over again, so that the POSITIVE becomes my reality.

See BM for 2 or 3 stretching sessions before the Marathon

Monday 1/11
Massage

Wednesday 1/13
Check weather for race; pick appropriate apparel and ensure I have everything.

Friday 1/15
Leave work and drive course.
Pickup packet on Friday (chip is in packet)

Remember to start conservative; finish strong. Run by effort... don't stress about pace
  • Do my 4 - 1 intervals through mile 10.
  • Increase to a 5 - 1 interval for mile 11,
  • Increase to a 6 - 1 for mile 12 and run mile 13
Do your runs at a HM effort - just like in training.
Don't worry about the pace numbers unless it's grossly too fast early.
Don't stress on the climbs; I'll make up the time on the downhill.
Be conscious of form; keep body in alignment... especially towards end of race.
Drink at every water stop through mile 10, at least, even if I don't think I need it.
Take additional Hammergel, just in case.
Have fun. Appreciate what I can do now; what I couldn't even think aobut 3 years ago.

30440 - My Lucky Number!

Okay so yesterday bib numbers were released for the half marathon.  I am 30440. 

One of my coaches sent out an email about a sim run we are doing on Saturday morning; I am running the last 6.2 miles of the half marathon course.  Ever since that email I've been a wreck, tearing up and worried about everything.  I wrote my first real race plan which event included reminders to potty!  Talk about details!

Don't get me wrong.  It's not that I don't think I'll finish.  I know I will and that should be the only thing that matters, so long as I give my best effort.  But the the thought that I may not achieve my realistic goal of sub 3 hours, makes it hard for me to even think about my stretch goal of sub 2:50. 

It seems like if I can do 6.2 miles in 1:19, I should be able to 13.1 in under 3 hours... even if I slow down!

I just don't want to disappoint myself... others. I know I've trained hard -- and learned a lot over the last several weeks with regard to pacing and trackwork.  I wish I had learned all that stuff much, much earlier!  But I can't change the past and can only take forward with me the new knowledge.

I know much of this is nerves.  I jokingly told one of my coaches that I would have to triple hydrate to make up for the tears (already had one episode this morning just writing her back!).

I still can't believe that I'm doing this.  Seriously, I can replay the times I said I would never, ever run like this.  I'm so thankful I can... and maybe that's what drives me to do it.

Then last night my running group's coaches caught up with me at the track and gave me my gift I didn't get at our holiday party because I left early. It was a plaque. They gave everyone an "award" which were silly, but still truths, about each of them. One was the "True Grit" award and another was the "You Can't Keep A Good Woman Down" award... you get the picture. 

Mine? Mine was the "Future Ironman" award. They believe I can.



It's in writing now... I'm going to do it before I am 50.

I thanked them for it, got in my car and cried. All my life I have been told I can't to this or that because of my weight. And even though I've lost a ton and done some amazing things, I still have 40 lbs. to go, at least. I've trained hard as I could, but someplace in my head is that mindset I can't do the things I want, or achieve my goals, because I'm still too fat... in fact, that must be it because here come the tears again. Ugh!.

Because if I'm keeping it real, the weight DOES keep me from going faster.  Plain and simple. That's undisputable and it's my biggest obstacle to all my athletic efforts... including doing a full IM one day.

I know that's not the right way to think about it, but that's what's happening in my head. I don't want to disappoint myself or anyone else...

Timely...

So right after I blogged my thoughts in my last post, I see this.

The Countdown
So my first half marathon is 13 days away.  I'm both excited and nervous.  I have no doubts I will finish; the only doubts I have are with actually achieving my stretch goal of sub 2:50 or realistic goal of finishing sub 3:00.  It's only a matter of approximately 30 to 45 seconds a mile.  Mental over the physical. 

I ran 10.5 miles on Saturday and it took me 2:30 to do so.  I don't quite understand how it all works yet, but with that time it's hard for me to see that either goal is achievable. I did take it "easy" and kept an LSD (long, slow distance) run an LSD run, which I don't have a tendancy to do.  I tend to get out there and try to run a race every weekend.  I'm getting better about it, now that I am beginning to understand pacing -- I have a way to go yet.  All that said, I was running on lack of sleep and not the best nutrition from New Year's Eve.

They say that with tapering, proper nutrition and the general raceday adrenaline, that I will do it.  I want to believe it, but I also don't want to set myself up for dissapointment.  This weekend I'm going to run the last 6.2 of the course to mentally prepare.  Wait!  I just realized that's half of the half!  LOL 


Oly Distance Training:
Training has been going well.  I figure if I managed to get it all in during the last 2 weeks with the holidays, I should be able to balance my schedule a little better.  I may try a couple of early morning workouts and just get to work a little later and stay later to make up time.  I only had to compromise 1 workout -- instead of drilling 1300m in swimming, I just did a 1300m easy swim so I would have juice left for my Sunday mad spin.

Sunday we had a mad, 2 hour long spin class, followed by a 30 minute easy run.  After my LSD Run on Saturday and swimming 1300m I was pretty tired Sunday, but was glad I made it through... even if my run pace wasn't much faster than my power walking!  LOL  Next week's mad-spin is 3 hours with a 45 minute run -- just in case last Sunday's wasn't enough of a challenge.

The training schedule is wild and defnitely more weekly mileage than I've ever done before.  Last week I logged 65+ miles between swimming, biking and running!  I didn't believe it until I saw my log.
