My Baby :)

So... a little more on the bike.

The deal on Craigs*ist fell through, as the did the *bay auction for the '06 models. But all was good with that because neither were the right size for me.  After I went to the shop to try a few on, I knew I needed a 51 in the Trek even a 50 in some of the others!  The only thing small about me is my bike size.  LOL

The excitement of the potential 'deal' got to both "Santa" and I and we started looking... really looking.  That's where the trouble starts.  LOL

I complied a spreadsheet of all the componenents of each of the bikes I was considering.  I was looking for a decent, step-up from entry level, tri bike without going to carbon.  Then I came across this closeout 2008 Trek Equinox 7 - WSD and as soon as I sat on it I knew it was right compared to the others I "tried on".  The PBM (personal bike mechanic aka "Husband") reviewed the features, and true to his engineering-self, highlighted the matrix's more desireable componenets, and for the buck, the bang from the Equinox was best.

I will preface the following with, I am not a gear head.  I leave that to my PBM and I just get on it and ride.  :)  The components are a "tri mix" of Shimano 105 and Dura-ace, which are a step up from my Specialized Allez Vita.  It also has the Profile Aerolite aerobars I had been looking at. And while I don't think my sexy red Rolf Vector Comp wheels entirely match the bike, I hope the Bontragers it's riding on will be comparable.  I realllly liked my old wheels.

The bike is mainly Trek's Alpha Red Aluminum, with a few carbon pieces.  the ARA is just their premium aluminum.

Anyway, I go back tonight to get fitted and bring my baby home.  I think I shall name her... but what?

Leave your suggestions and if I choose yours, I'll send you a free gift. :)

Running Milestone

10.13 miles in approximately 2:20.  :)  first 2/3rds of the run was good.  Last third I started feeling a little tired and stiffness in my knees.  Overall though, I felt better than expected!

Who'd of thunk it!  Something about doing 10 seems significant.

9 weeks until the half marathon!  Just have to keep the focus.

Newcomer of the Year!

I neglected to mention that my tri club had our end of year party.  It was lots of fun and strange to see so many of them in regular clothes -- not a stich of lycra in the house!

Good food and fun.  Darren even came and met my "other family".  I think he had a good time too!  I also think he might very well try to do the sprint distance for Lonestar in April, which by the way is now a "certified" IM 70.3 course!

So at the party my club recognized many athletes -- the folks that make me want to get better and better.  Anyway, I was presented with the Female Newcomer of the Year award .  Basically what it means is that I suck a whole lot less than when I started last April.  I'm not the fastest by any stretch, but I try super hard and have come a long way from my first "brick" with the club when I couldn't even run a quarter mile (and now I'm doing 10 miles on Sunday!).

Some of the club folks are trying to convince me to go 70.3.  Why do they taunt me so?  I was content with my decision to do the Oly!

Friday Fill♥ins

1. We need to remember that today is our tomorrow and the past is history.
2. I saw the Oreo icing on Cass-a-frass' head I laughed and it made me smile.
3. If you want to do something bad enough, you will.
4. Do it now because I said so.  <---- classic "Momism"
5. Massachusetts has a proposed 5% sales tax on elective cosmetic surgery; I think it's only the beginning of what we'll start to see; healthcare will find a way to make money, regardless of what the Government sets forth to do.  It's sad.
6. Family, friends, love, hope and peace makes for a happy holiday.
7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to girls night with just me and Cass-a-frass.  tomorrow my plans include a b'day party for a Friend of Cass' and Sunday, I want to run my 10 miles and get'r'dun.

Thursday Thirteen

And here we go!

  1. 59 Days until the half-marathon.  And while I've not fully embraced running, it is quite possible I am in some sort of denial, or why then would Iregister for a 12.5 mi. trail run?  Seriously.  That said, it should be fun -- I will take my time and not risk injury, but I do understand that it will be a very different experience from regular running.
  2. Well, thanks for the vibes, but plan "A" for the Trek Equinox fell through.  Evidently some women bought the bike about 90 minutes after I called.  She doesn't realize it, but what she wants is a road bike and the guy tried to tell her tri bikes are different.  He really wanted a triathlete (me) to have it.  When he heard she was going to take it to a local bike store and replace parts to make it road bike friendly, he offered her my name and number, in case they talked sense into her at the bike store.
  3. Even though plan "A" fell through completely an the lady never comes to her senses... I'm holding hope out for plan "B".  Turns out one of my blogging triathlete she-ros is auctioning her old bike and I happened to come across it.  Not many people with her name, so I wrote her to confirm it was her... and it was.  :)  So in 4 days and 4 hours maybe I'll get lucky.  I would really be kind to your previously loved bike, if I were to get it.  :)
  4. Oh... We had our tri club end-of-year party on Monday night.  Guess who was named "Female Newcomer of the Year"?  Me!  While I'm kinda surprised, I totally appreciate the recognition.
  5. A bunch of clubsters are training to do the half iron for Lonestar.  I'd be lying if I didn't admit that I was thinking of going right for the Half instead of the Olympic.  No one will know exactly what I choose except my coach and my clickity fingers when I register!  LOL  Being smart and practical is the only thing holding me back from registering for the half... I also hear being smart and practical is sometimes over-rated.  *shrug*
  6. I have yet to schedule my 3 year post-op appointment... or reschedule my mammogram for that matter... not that anyone needs to know.
  7. Cass-a-frass is loving her new glasses.  She was able to see a difference immediately!  I only wished I recognized sooner how hard it was for her to see!  She looks so much like Darren now!
  8. Holiday hustle and bustle start for us Friday.  Darren is off to AL to pick-up Nana and drive her here for a week.  Then he'll driver her home and fly back to TX.
  9. Speaking of Darren, he's feeling improvements with is running!  He's going to be doing his first 5K on Turkey Day.  I'm proud of him for sticking to it; I know it's been frustrating to him.  Running seems as if it should be as simple as just walking faster.
  10. I can never get out of Sam's Club (or insert your favorite warehouse store here) for less than $100.
  11. Have I mentioned I really want a tri bike?  I mean really.  I'm not sure I've been clear.  It doesn't even have to be new!  I'm not picky... that said any Trek, Felt and Cervelo entry level bikes would be welcome under my tree.
  12. My priority registration for the MS150 expires tomorrow.  I promised myself I was not doing the event again, but I did consider volunteering.  With my First Aid, CPR and AED cert and 2 MS150's under me, I can volunteer to be a ride marshal for the event... it really all depends on my training for Lonestar, as the MS150 is just 2 weeks before the Tri... so probably not.
  13. No Thursday 13 next Thursday because I'll be overdosing on turkey.  :)  I hope everyone has a lovely Thanksgiving with friends and family, taking a moment to recall all the things you are truly thankful for.

Need Some Good Vibrations

I'm putting this out to the universe.  I want this bike.  There's a guy here locally selling it, and as we speak a woman is coming to look at it -- but what she really needs is a road bike, not a tri bike. He wants to sell it to me since I'm a "triathlete" -- I want him to sell it to me since, well, I want it.  It would cost me as much to outfit my road bike for a tri... so send me some vibrations, please. :)

3 Years Out

Not going to be much hoopla, but today I'm 3 years post-op.  It's my "surgiversary."

Still thankful I am no longer Diabetic and can sleep without a CPAP -- those things did not mix well with the quality of life I was trying to obtain. "Life" being the operative word.

Make no mistake... Gastric Bypass ain't no magic bullet.  I figured I'd have this licked by now, but you just never know how things will turn out on each individual's journey.  When I hear people say, "she took the easy way out" it still makes my skin crawl and I have to keep respectful, because really, what's so easy about he re-arranging your innards, counting grams of sugars/carbs so you don't throw-up, taking a handful of vitamins, TWICE a day and generally minding after yourself to ensure you reamain in good health and suffer no repercussions from your choice?

And yeah, it still eats at me inside to see people who totally disregard rules, eat shitty, don't exercise and basically ignore their mental well-being and still reach their goal weights.  That's BS.  Can't help it, can't fake what I feel.

Honestly, I pretty much agreed with my surgeon, in that I "would be a poster child" for this surgery.  In my mind, that has not happened.  I my mind, while I have success with a great many things as a result of my surgery, I am not a success, in full yet.  I guess that's my big mental ef-up -- I associate success with the number on the scale, and that's got to change.

I always felt like something was wrong before I had surgery... and even still after, something is still not right-- We just know what it is now (hypo-T).  I hope and pray that having the bypass doesn't impact the medical treatment to get me to some level of "normal" again, so I can drop the last of this weight.

On the bright side, I pretty much maintain my weight, with the Swooping up and down the same pounds of water weight from the Hypothyroidism.  I'm hopeful that will subside, once my levels are right, but it takes so damn long.

Somedays I feel very little restriction, but then there's days like today, where 3 bites of a turkey sandwich, a few raw carrots and green beans, leave me feeling as full as I used to feel on the eves of Thanksgivings past.

So enough about that.  There's my "celabratory" sentiment. Just keeping it real.  I've never be ethereal or flowery about it.

So, my 9+ mile run was decent.  Maintained just over a 13 minute pace, so for that I'm happy.  My new shoes killed my feet.  The running store guy put me in a neutral shoe, since the gait analysis showed my stability shoes overcompensating and causing some slight bowl-leggedness.

What he neglected to mention was NOT to wear them for my long run until I had at least 20 miles on them.  Ugh.  I literally had icepacks on my feet Saturday afternoon and there was pain with every step.  Much better now.

Next, from the "I think I'm smoking crack" list, I registered for a 12.5 mile trail run in Huntsville State Park -- it's part of their 50K Trail Run, but they're offering the shorter distance. I'm a bit nervous, since I'm not really known for my grace, but I figure, if I can get through this woodsy challenge, I'll make it through the half marathon... so long as a tree root doesn't trip me up.

That's about it for now.  Tri training starts December 20th.  Lonestar will be 17 short weeks away.

4. Thoughts of what direction to go in fill my head.

Catch up...

I missed Friday Fill-ins this past week. Whoops!

Saturday was my 25K relay with Mike (aka Hombre) a friend in both my tri club and running club.  Mike's headed to San Antonio this weekend for the Rock-n-roll marathon, so he needed an easy taper run, so he partnered with me.  :)  My 7.75 was good... kept a 13:10 pace for the distance, so I'm happy with that.  I learned that I need to check the night before that I have the right breakfast food, and that I have the right gel.  Tried the Accelgel,.. didn't work for me.

Anyway, the run was good.  I was happy.

My Ironman Florida friends did amazing.  I sat on the Internet and watched the majority of them cross the line.  I missed anyone who finished under 13, and we had a few, but saw other familiar faces cross the line... so cool.  So inspiring to see.

Speaking of inspring... only 68 days until the Houston Half Marathon... seems so close!

Speed work tonight was good.  Got in 4.2 miles. and had some good intervals.  Much easier this week, given I beat the drum corps to practice.  Last week it was a challenge to maintain MY pace, when all I wanted to do was run to THEIR beat.  As cool a street-beat as it was, it was messin' me up!

On Sunday I volunteered at a Half Ironman as part of an AED response team, alone with *E* and another Dude.  It's one of those things where you hope you get to stand around, do nothing, and drink your coffee.  2 swimmers were escorted in, barely making the time cut-off and 1 was pulled-out... didn't look like they made it half-way.  You can't fake a half iron distance, so I feel badly that they probably trained hard and just had a bad race day. :(  And yes, I stood around, drank my coffee, and kibitz'd with the real paramedics.  :)

Back to work today and I'm pretty busy at work, so it keeps me focused.

Started reading "Say You're One of Them"... effin' A, great so far.

Thursday Thirteen - the B'day Edition

13 things I'd wush for my b'day.... (outside of being surrounded by love, family and friends)

1) The perfect tri short and with that free race enter for every race I wanted to do.

2) Meet Oprah, Dr. Oz, Ekhardt Tolle, Jillian, Bob, Steve Gunn and okay, what the heck, the Obamas... all of them.

3) A world with no hate.  Seriously... I'm not just playing "answer the pageant question".  There's some eff'd up stuff going on right in Houston's backyard

4) To know fully that my Daughter will grow to be smart, safe and sound long after I've left this Earth.

5) That all those I love know how much a part of me was inspired by a part of them.

6) To master what it means to be "in the moment" all the time.

7) To be able to figure out what it is I need to do with my life. If I can't figure out what to do with my life, then do something to help others.

8) To really, truly forgive.

9) Of course, a million dollars... Heck!  Who am I kidding? $100k would suffice.

10) That my Mother quits smoking and takes care of herself.

11) That my sister could have a housekeeper full-time so her kids don't have to grow up like we did.  Not that it was bad growing up at the dance studio, but there's so much more to do as a family..

12) That my Ironman Florida friends swim like fish, ride like they stole it and run like the wind... all the while being safe and enjoying the fruits of the year long training.

13) Get my T-roid under control, drop the last of this weight!

Speed Workout

Did my speed workout last night.  It was okay.

We do our speed workouts at the high school track.  The band was practicing last night.  It was quite the challenge to keep my own pace, while listening to their street beat.  I looked down at my watch and saw me running and 8:20 pace, but that lasted all of a minute.  LOL

I tried.  Running with the drum core in the background is like rubbing your belly and patting your head at the same time. :)

I have a 25K Relay this weekend and my only goal is to do better than I did at the last relay.  I'm okay if I don't get a sub 13 again, I just want to be well and race my race.

My tri club friends are off to Ironman Florida.  I'm really bummed I couldn't make the trip happen so I could volunteer, but life gets in the way.  I admire the dedication and courage of every one of them!

I"m going to be putting my AED certification to work this weekend.  I'm a little nervous about it, because heaven forbid we really need to take more action than just drink coffee and wait.  But I have the certification and it makes sense to use it!
